OK. I have installed the Debian package of OpenMotif which is freely
available from the openmotif download page
www.openmotif.com/download/dldform.php. Debian is even the default
option in the chooser! You need the runtime and development packages
(the latter if you wish to compile any motif apps). The development
package is big, mind you.
I have had little success compiling apps with Lesstif. I *always* get
problems. I really wanted to compile the motif app Ishmail, a wonderful
email application fror Linux, which is now under active development. I
couldn't get it to compile with Lesstif but it compiled cleanly with
OpenMotif.
Unfortunately, the latest versions of Netscape don't come with a 'motif
version'. The older Netscapes look for an older version of motif too. I
was quite excited about this one as well.
For me, installing OpenMotif is worth it just for Ishmail!!! The Ishmail
web site is: http://ishmail.sourceforge.net/ - look at the link to the
original Ishmail website for more info on the once commercial app.
