Numlockx was exactly what I needed, thanks Bob.  For anyone wanting to
do the same thing, I found numlockx here: 
http://www.debian.org/~adric/numlockx/

Install it with 'dpkg -i numlockx....blah,blah'
Then put the command 'numlockx on' in your x start-up.  I just put in
the autostart folder in KDE.
