I have tried gnome, w/ window manager, and kde w/ kwm (i liked this better than
gnome). KDE
provide a lot of stuff I don't need, so did gnome. I am not trying to spark a gnome
vs. K, or any window
manager debate.

I have been using KDE for 6 mos. now, but would like to lighten the machine load, by
ditching the
desktop (while keeping X). Being raised on MS-Win.. I am trying to comprehend what a
screen usuallly
looks like with a window managaer ansd x running, but no desktop. If I just chose to
use a window
manager without a desktop, what does my screen look like if I don't have any apps
running? Without a
desktop what kind of graphical shortcuts can I have? Do I have to call all of my
programs from the
console? Links to screenshots would be great to, or if you are running a machine with
x, and no
desktop, email me a screen shot, I would be much obliged.

I would just try it right now but I am out of town for a 2 more weeks, and away from
my machine. I
want to know now.

ps-I NEED A TEXT EDITOR. I like Kedit because: the aesthetics, simplicity, speed,
and compact size. I
like syntax highlighting, which Kedit does not have. The programs I have tried (to
numerous to list)
have either been too big (<1.5MB is nice), too ugly, lack simplicity, or overwhelming
with features.
