Here's a simple test: Log in as root and type: echo 1 > /dev/dsp ...you should not have any error messages IIf you hear a faint tick come out of the speakers, things are good [you may need to turn up the volume a ways]. Then try it as a normal user. If it fails, then permissions are wrong.
