If you can, since you just installed, reinstall fresh from a hail CD.

You need to ensure you have the new version of lilo installed, pointed
at the new screen (graphic_screen). The old screen doesn't work with
the new one, and you might experience the problem you describe.

Starting X how?

xterms or console? terminals have a setting for font size. text consoles
might for some reason still be using framebuffer console, unless you
upgraded the kernel. I'd suggest at least upgrading to 2.2.16-storm over
the 2.2.14-storm from rain.
