This is straight from IBM's support site
Cause:
                The G40 Monitor does not support 60Hz refresh rate at
1024x768 resolution.
                43Hz is the only supported refresh rate at 1024x768,
which the ThinkPad will
                only supply when in CRT Only Mode.

I remember those monitors,we had a few till we got rid of them.
And they had something similar that wouldn't do 800x600 ,only 1024x768 .
They're weird and Brian is right ,don't go above 800x600 unless you
really want a new monitor sometime soon.:-)
