Try this on a console as root.
apt-get update dselect
then go back and try SPM.
SPM looks more like a interface to dselect(I may be wrong here but I
don't think so) but anyway dselects database and apt-get's ones get
sometimes out of sync and syncing them is a good idea and may solve your
problems.
Basically the culprit here is apt with came with it's own databse
as opposed to dselect who uses dpkg's database if apt-get method is
not selected.
It's not very clear since I'm not totally clear about it but as a
very general idea this is how things are .
