are you referring to the lilo menu that comes up at boot, or the actual gdm
session manager?

For the lilo screen, you need to edit /etc/lilo.conf. There's a line that
says:

message=/boot/graphic_screen

You need to change what graphic_screen is. It appears to be some sort of
indexed color RGB file. But that's all I can determine. The only thing that
opened it is the GIMP (yaaay GIMP) but it didn't look too good. It's some
sort of framebuffer file.

For the gdm login screen, the reference to it is in:

/etc/gdm/Init/Default

Edit this file to change the login screen used and voila!
