I just reinstalled hail, and I was able to select which packages I wanted.
I forget the exact option; "custom" or something like that (equivalent to 
"You choose").

Packages are divided into sections, and where appropriate, subdivided
into client and server packages.

If you're installing on a box with a small hard drive, it's a good idea to
do a minimal install, then select additional packages with dselect. The
amount of space the installer tells you will be used does not include the
space used by the .deb files. I found this out the hard way :(
