I can't answer this one as I don't use the ALSA drivers yet. I am thinking
about switching though as they appear to be superior for my SBLive card than
Creative's driver that I'm using now.

Well they include USB and support for UDMA-66. Other than that, I don't know
for sure what you mean. You might try taking a look at the kernel config
with the kernel source and see what options are set, but I'm not sure that
would necessarily be true of the binary kernel included with the distro.

HelixGnome and Sawfish work fine. I use them myself. No problems. You might
need to do an apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade to make sure you're using
the latest packages. Other than that, I don't know what error you could be
receiving.
