1.Storm rain came with framebuffer enabled.Not sure if setting
vga=normal in
/etc/lilo.conf and rerunnig lilo will solve it.You can try and run fbset
to set it up to a lower resolution ,don't remember the options ,read the
manual-I had typed the command in .bashrc and that took care of it.
2.Better to recompile the kernel without framebuffer support
3.The other option would be to upgrade the kernel via a precompiled
package that
has a compiled kernel(pretty generic) and the modules
apt-cache search kernel-image
apt-get install kernel-image-xxxxxx
 pick one equal or higher to kernel-image-2.2.16-storm
either one of those won't have the framebuffer support so you'll get
back the 
regular fonts in vt's (consoles)
