If I recall correctly, Debian handles this very well by presenting the
user with a choice of "task-oriented" package selections, such as (to
name a few) a minimal base system, a typical X workstation with a
decent selection of apps, or an internet server.
I would LOVE to see something like this make it's way into Storm's
installer!
