Heya folks,

Okay, I should of re-worded some of what I was tryin to say. Maybe I
should have said "dummy-basic home/office workstation install" instead.

Yes, I always do a custom install. I have also worked as a sys admin for
over 8 years and know what just about every damn package does. So for me
it's not a problem doing a custom install. However, talk with an average
Mac user, and most have never done a custom install. Hell, most win95/98
users take their system as they get it from the retailer and never
add/subtract windows packages from it. They just keep adding apps/games
as they want.

One of the bonuses of Linux, is if you want, you can install servers,
development tools, etc... Power Users enjoy this. Hard-core geeks like
myself live for this. Joe user doesn't care. ASk most Window98 users if
they have the MS Personal Web Server installed and you'll be lucky to
fin one who even knew it was installed by default with Win98.

<duck in-coming flames>
Corel Linux (RIP), has the sweetest installer (from a non-geek point of
view) I have come across for Linux yet. If you know nothing about Linux,
and do a typically install here is how it goes:
- boots up
- ask three questions
-- Your Name
-- Your Password
-- Root Password
- reboots into a fully operational Linux workstation

Corel, like everyone else in this arena, still puts too many package in
the default install and they took hell from the Linux community for not
offering better options for servers and development.

For most of us on this list, it's hard to imagine what it is like to
just "use" a computer. We all play with our PCs. New OSs, bleeding edge
software, etc..., but for the most part, most users just want something
that works as simple as their toaster oven or TV. For them it's a tool,
not a way to spend a long weekend trying out new kernels and compiliers.

Just my two cents folks.
