In my experience, this is pretty easy, but YMMV since I have a generic
desktop workstation assembled from parts, and I've seen rumors that
portables can be a PITA.

They will most probably upgrade without any problem, and if you hit
a snag, you'll find this list sehr responsive.

Emphatically - Yes!  I recently installed netscape.  This consisted of

apt-get install netscape

a half dozen packages were downloaded and installed without further
intervention.  I usually prefer to do this with dselect since it
would have probably shown be a list of alternatives to required
modules as well as additional suggested modules which I like to
tailor to my own individual preferences; I was in a hurry during
this holiday season, though.  The developers choices are usually
very apt.
