3 factors (aside from modem speed) ought to help determine what you want:
#1 What kind of files do you need to import to edit?

If you need to read and edit docs Word Docs then you probably want Star Office (I
can't tell you about K-OFFICE). (A
word of warning if you use plots generated by Excel, the spreadsheet component of
StarOffice totally mangles them,
although the data is left intact) If you want something that looks a bit like Word,
but is not as bloated and resource
hungry, AbiWord might be a good choice, I don't know about KOffice or WordPerfect)

#2 Who do you have to share the files with? Star Office can save as Word Docs (It's
too bad the others don't). On the
other hand, AbiWord can save in rtf format, which can be read by MS Office users ( as
well as in text, LaTex and a
number of other formats). My favorite is Lyx, because I can work on presentations and
insert postscript diagrams. For
writing formulas, it also handy. It takes a while longer to get used to than AbiWord
though. The advantage is that you
can export the files as postscript, and then use ps2pdf to convert them into Adobe
Acrobat files, that can be read on
any platform. The inserted postscript files can also be resized and do not come out
with jagged or blurred edges.

#3 What are your computer resources? StarOffice is a bloated hog as far as system
resources. I must admit, because of
the fact that I have to share Word documents with others, I usually stick with this
one despite occasional system
hangs when working with large excel files. AbiWord looks really nice, though, if you
don't need all of the
bells, whistles, dancing paperclips from hell, etc.
