There are actually more than one but you're on the right track.

You also need the specific joystick driver for your joystick (for example:
wingman.o). You *may* also need to load joystick support for your soundcard.
It depends on if that portion was compiled into the kernel or not. That's
why it's best just to recompile the kernel. To make sure *everything* you
need is indeed compiled in or as modules.
I have a USB joystick, so I don't worry about this anymore ;-) Actually, my
joystick supports both gameport style and USB (adapter). I have a wingman
extreme 3D digital and it works great. I used it when testing Descent 3 for
Linux.
