Well I wonder how long this website will stay up. Hopefully a while
longer.
This is just a message for all the fellow storm hail potato users out
there. Stay with it for now, just because Storm has gone sideways, you
still have a stable current potato system. Just point your
/etc/apt/sources.list to:
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian potato main contrib non-free
Don't panic and go upgrade to woody, there is nothing wrong with
potato. I did and I wasn't very happy with it. Some things don't quite
work and you can't go back unless you re-install Storm. And frankly,
Xfree 4 is no different from Xfree 3.3.6 unless you are going to play 3D
games or your card is unsupported in the older version. KDE2 is
available for potato also and works very well. So is Ximian gnome 1.2.
If you don't have a copy of Storm on disk, get one while you can before
the servers go down forever. Storm is an EASY way to install Debian
from scratch, Storm creates all those nasty config files for you. When
woody goes stable its as simple as an apt-get dist-upgrade and all your
config files are set already. (although you should learn how to edit
them manually anyhow).
I panicked and decided to try Mandrake 7.2, it is slow and it crashed on
me in one day... Hail has never crashed on me. I tried Progeny from
CD-ROM, and the installer is terrible (but its still in beta). And then
I tried woody, and got a few broken packages in gnome (libgnomeprint).
And I couldn't get some packages of my own to install that worked in
potato.
Since I wrecked my system and did a Storm re-install and now have to use
the debian servers, I have lost the new storm package manager upgrade
and the boot module for SAS (the one where you can configure the startup
daemons). If anybody has these packages in .deb form and would like to
email them to me, I would be very thankful!!!!

Cheers and best of luck to the Stormix Team -- it really is the BEST
distro available.
