Hi
Well,as of now we don't know anything about the future of
Stormix.Rumours have
been around but nothing really official or highly credible.
If you want to try a .deb based distro IMHO you should just install
Stormix hail
and use it.It is based on the current Debian stable release(potato) so
there's
no lack of software. The main thing is that Stormix did the right thing
and built
a distro on top of Debian,so there aren't too many differences.Their
packages are
working quite well alonside Debian. The main thing is,after you have a
Debian distro installed,it will upgrade in place very easy,so hopefully
by the time
you need a reinstall from scratch you'll be familiar with the Debian
tools
and you won't really need a lot of the things that are important when
you move
from a different distro.
Anyway, you want to try "the Debian side" so you have nothing to lose by
installing Storm now ,regardless if they'll put up another distro or
not.
By the time woody is released you'll be able to just upgrade to Debian
with confidence if that'll be the case.If you want to keep up with the
latest stuff
(desktop)you'll have to hit Debian unstable anyway so....your pick.
Anyway, main differences between Stormix and Debian:better
installer-compatible with what other Distros have,a nice graphical
package manager front_end(which
is maintained in the Debian unstable as well) and a very useful control
panel
(SAS).
None of these are really essential and 6 months down the road you'll
feel very comfortable without them.At least it's my opinion-granted I
started with Debian so Stormix install and admin was a piece if cake.:-)
.Anyway if
you have any experience with another distro it will be easy to learn
"the_Debian_way",time consuming and frustrating at the beginning
but....there's
always a price to pay.
