ALL Power Labs is taking the show on the road this summer. We're offering
our first ever gasification workshop outside of the US in the Philippines
next month. This hands-on workshop is being graciously hosted by John
Vermeulen and Penelope Reyes of Tuwâ The Laughing Fish, an Eco-homestead and
Sustainability Center in Cabiao, Philippines. This will be the first event
in their new sustainability training center.

Hopefully this workshop will be easier to attend for those in Asia
interested in the GEK, than travelling all the way to APL in California.
Flights into Manila from most of East and Southeast Asia seem in the $200
range on local carriers. The Tuwâ farm in Cabiao is about 90km north of
Manila.

The workshop will be run on the same model as our events in California. As
usual, we'll combine basic information, training
demonstration and hands-on experience running small-scale biomass
gasification equipment. We'll have a full GEK Power Pallet on hand, as well
as one other stand alone basic GEK, and plan to run a variety of local
biomass materials through them over the two days of the workshop.

Here's the 10kw Power Pallet we shipped last week to the Philippines for the
workshop:
http://www.gekgasifier.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1439#post1439

The workshop will begin with an evening talk on the science and engineering
of gasification, and considerations for successful small
scale gasifier installations in the developing world. We'll go through the
specific design intents and capabilities of the Power Pallet, and how it can
combine electricity generation, heat and mechanical shaft power in a single
energy machine. We'll similarly explore the GEK manufacturing method, and
how it can enable local manufacturing of gasification and pyrolysis machines
of many designs. Everyone will get a packet with lots of explanatory
information and graphics. All attendees leave with a good foundation in the
basics of gasification and pyrolysis.

The hands-on workshop will continue for two days after the opening talk.
Participants will learn how to operate and maintain the GEK gasifier and
Power Pallet. We'll explore the particulars of feedstock sourcing and
pre-processing, and the specific challenges of operating gasifiers in the
tropics. John and the folks at Tuwâ are particularly interested in bamboo
as gasifier fuel, and I look forward to finally having an opportunity to
experiment with it. Other projects will surely arise and develop in
relation to the interests of attendees.

The workshop will be of relevance for local project developers, academics,
students, international development consultants, farmers, food coops, alt
energy entrepreneurs, and others interested in the powers of local
self-determination.

Other Upcoming Workshops:

We're getting increasing requests to hold the APL gasification workshop
weekends elsewhere in the world. This sounds like a great idea, so we're
agreeing to most requests. There needs to be some GEK machinery on your end
to make it meaningful, as well as some people who want to explore the issues
for localizing the technology. If you have these particulars, or want to
consider assembling these particulars, write us and we can explore the
options.

Here's the list of international workshops currently planned or under active
consideration. More to come soon.

- Germany in late October with Holger Roswandowicz ofhttp://nrg-consultants.com/
- Kenya in late September with Jon Bohmer of the Kyoto Institute at Narok
University College:
   http://horufadhi.com/news_detail.php?nid=105
- Nigeria in winter with Yoav Platnik of www.ecopowerafrica.com

And finally, our fall workshop at APL in Berkeley California will be October
8-11, 2010. Information on the workshop is here:
