The next time you're feeling sorry for the quality of your kids' education or
their lives in general, consider this:

For the first time ten American Indian honor roll eighth-grade students from
Our Lady of Lourdes School at Porcupine on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South
Dakota visit the Twin Cities through April 22nd. They rolled in riding in
their yellow school bus on April 17th after a ten-hour drive from an area that
has counties statistically having the worst poverty conditions in the country.

The six girls and four boys, ages 13-14 who live on the Pine Ridge Reservation
were chaperoned by school volunteers, Joe Abdo, their 8th grade teacher of
Bloomington, Minnesota, Lauren Belski of New Jersey, Brian Russ of
Philadelphia. Gloria Two Crows, their Lakota language instructor, also
accompanied them.

One of the student events was to go to the Branch 3 Catholic Charities in St.
Paul. There, the students donned aprons and hair nets to volunteer for the
6:30 a.m. breakfast shift to serve more than 700 people breakfast. After, they
received a round of applause and standing ovation for their participating.
This was the students'¹way of giving back to the Minneapolis community that had
welcomed them so warmly.

The school has a tradition of sponsoring a spring trip for there eighth grade
class, as an incentive for good behavior and academic achievement. Students
voted to go to the TC so they created fundraising events throughout the school
year to help pay for the trip.

The students will make their first-time visit to the Minnesota Science and
History Museums, St. Thomas University, Minnesota Zoo, Omni Theater, Mall of
America, Underwater World, attend a Minnesota Twins game (Timberwolves) and a
performance of The Lion King.
