Being rather new to all of this, what exactly does it mean to have the DFL endorsement and what responsibilities from the candidate come along with the endorsement? Do you have to follow the DFL platform exactly or just parts you agree with? Do you have to agree to support all of the other DFL endorsed candidates for that election year? Forever?
The Saint Paul Pioneer Press ran an article on October 4, 2001.
"St. Paul City Council Members Chris Coleman and Pat Harris announced their support for mayorial candidate state Sen. Randy Kelly today over Kelly's opponent and fellow Council Member Jay Benanav."
"Coleman and Harris made their official announcement at a news conference in front of the 65-acre Koch-Mobil tank farm, which city officials are hoping to redevelop into the River Bluff urban village. Kelly lauded the site for its untapped potential."
"The Koch-Mobil site is a symbol of a city that has so much to grow, said Kelly, citing support as a state legislator for numerous downtown and neighborhood development projects over the years."
"Council Member Coleman said Kelly was qualified to continue development and redevelopment efforts started under the administration of Mayor Norm Coleman, who isn't seeking re-election and has also endorsed Kelly."
"Tough times call for tough leadership, Chris Coleman said. The ciity is facing economic challenges, and the reason I stand here today is because of (Kelly)."
"Randy Kelly has proven he can make the tough decisions, Harris added."
"Coleman and Harris said they were confident their endorsement of Kelly wouldn't hurt their working relationship with Benanav, the DFL endorsee."
Benanav said, "If Chris wants to support someone who brought Gopher State Ethanol and a busway to his neighborhood, thats fine."
Gee I wonder how true the second to last statement really is with Benanav supporting Ortega and Harris supporting Coleman. Come to think of it, when was the last time Chris Coleman endorsed with his support any local or congressional candidate endorsed by the city or fourth district DFL conventions? Still wondering what the DFL endorsement means and if its really worth it besides getting some money and help.
