I agree. I've been seeing a lot of these tinyurl links in mail messages recently (mostly from Ted, I think ;) and thinking about what we could do to remove the need for them. (They're very handy, there's no doubt about that.) In addition to what you mention above, one other thing that bothers me about them is that you have no indication of where you're going when you follow one. It could be on the Apache site, but it could be anywhere, and you don't know until you get there. So, I'm thinking about proposing to the infrastructure folks that we run a tinyurl work-alike at Apache. There are quite a lot of these around now - see http://notlong.com/links/ - but I don't know if any of them are open source. If not, I might have to write one, but it shouldn't be that hard.
