Hi,

I would like to announce yet another example application using struts.
I wrote a 63 page chapter in the Wrox Professional JSP 2nd Edition book
that introduces the Jakarta Struts Framework from an architectural stand
point and covers the construction of an e-commerce example. Note, I'm
not asking everyone to go out an buy the book. No, I don't get
royalties from the book. Yes, I did receive some money for the chapter,
but it nowhere near covered the time and effort I put into the chapter.

I do have the source code available for download
(http://www.newparticles.com/struts/downloads/index.html) and I will be
improving on the example by incorporating EJBs and a database. I'm
working with JBoss, so that's going to be my application server of
choice. I haven't decided on a database yet. It won't be Oracle or any
other Microsoft product. It will most likely be open source and will
work well with JBoss.

The chapter was developed using a 1.0 nightly build back in March 2001.
It should still run under the latest version, but I haven't tried it
since May. I'm in the process of getting back into using the
framework. The chapter took so much out of me I needed some time off.

Known short comings in the example:
------------------------------------------
1. I have not implemented templates.
2. I have more scriptlet coding in my pages than needed.
3. I didn't use a database, but the a servlet and the Digester to load
default data.
4. I've not implemented order tracking.
5. and many more for sure

If you have any suggested improvements please email me at

The Main struts page at the New Particles site is:

The source code is under the Downloads link:

There is a link to the book as listed on the Wrox web site if you are
interested. (http://www.newparticles.com/struts/steve.html) Note, you
can get it cheaper from places like amazon. John Zukowsi, in an article
on IBM developer works, gave the book a 4.5 star rating out of a
possible 5.

Remember, I'm not trying to push the book. You can get all you need
from the example without the book. I'm available for questions at
either email address above.

FYI, I'm currently using the Digester in a project at work. I would
like to thank all those involved in updating the documentation. It is
so much better than when I did the chapter. Rather than thank everyone
individually, I'd like to thank everyone that participates in the
project.

Last of all, I would like to thank Craig, as I did in the
acknowledgements of the book, for donating the framework to the Jakarta
project.

Steve
