I wonder if the issue here is really about fonts.

...it looks great on my work pc (IE on Win2k), but looks like crap on my
laptop (RH8 with Mozilla)

This is exactly my point. If you're using IE it's ok, but not other browsers. Mozilla has an irritating habit of rendering fonts extra small but if they used a larger font in the left nav. it wouldn't be a problem.



I would hope that the stylesheet fonts are customizable?
