We haven't provided the functionality because no one has volunteered code that 
proves the feature can work without the side-effects James and Martin 
mentioned. If you have a working solution that avoids these problems, then 
attach it to ticket #17391.

I very much doubt that we would implement a feature that encourages people to 
use binary types on an ActionForm and then use them for data-entry via the 
html:tags. I would agree with James and Martin in that formatting data is out 
of the scope of the html:* tags. [I'm not altogether convinced we should even 
support it with bean:write :)] 

If people want to use the framework in ways other than intended, that's up to 
them. But we must be very careful that the features we add to the core 
encourage best practices rather than "disputable" practices. Otherwise, we 
create a support burden for the many kind volunteers who offer people 
assistance on the USER list. 

If you want to discuss this further, please open a thread on the DEV or USER 
list.
