That (window.open()) is probably breaking the coolmenus javascript. The target attribute should be supported. You should verify that the target is being specified in the generated javascript. I believe it should be the 4th argument to the oCMenu.makeMenu() call.
BTW, it's possible to override the target attribute (defined in the xml config file) in the displayMenuTag.
