Ok, where do I send the check to?

That fixed it. Added an ant task to run the native2ascii on my
babel-generated UTF files, with target encoding specified as "UTF-8". Now
they work fine through bean:message.

Now I'm going to have to spend some time figuring out what the relationship
between UTF-8 file and ascii file with "escaped unicode" is ;-). I'm gonna
guess here that although the browsers support UTF-8, java doesn't - so it
has to be converted and escaped so that it doesn't get mangled by the vm?

Again, I owe you a lunch or some beers. Or something. That one was
driving us craaaazy.

Jim

Hmm...again, i'm pretty clueless about this stuff, but this page on
native2ascii does list UTF-8 as a candidate for conversion (at the *very*
end of the list):

http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.1/docs/tooldocs/solaris/native2ascii.html

...so that's why i thought it might be helpful for your situation.
