Ok, where do I send the check to?
That fixed it. Added an ant task to run the native2ascii on my babel-generated UTF files, with target encoding specified as "UTF-8". Now they work fine through bean:message. Now I'm going to have to spend some time figuring out what the relationship between UTF-8 file and ascii file with "escaped unicode" is ;-). I'm gonna guess here that although the browsers support UTF-8, java doesn't - so it has to be converted and escaped so that it doesn't get mangled by the vm? Again, I owe you a lunch or some beers. Or something. That one was driving us craaaazy.
