Like I say, the expression captures the semantic meaning -- obviously
syntactically wrong. So, do u have any idea on how to dynamically name
setters for a Mapped property?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

See JSP Spec: 2.13.1:

"The expression must appear by itself (multiple
expressions, and mixing of expressions and string constants are not
permitted)."

You could try this:

 [JSP]
 ...
 <logic:iterate id="unpaidCitation" name="unpaidCitaions" >
 <tr>
   <td><% String property = "payCitation(" + unpaidCitation.getCitation() +
")"; %>
     <html:checkbox property="<%=property%>)"/>
     <bean:write name="unpaidCitation" property="citation" filter="true"/>
   </td>
