Have you thought of using Rich Text Format (.rtf files) instead of actual Word (.doc) files? RTFs would probably be easier to create from java since it uses a type of markup language (plain text) and there may already be utilities in java for creating such files. The best thing is Word will open these files just as well as it does it's own DOC format.
