I work with ClearCase and WSAD 4.0.3 and can tell you that merging xml files of the size you are talking about is terrible. We have about 100+ different xml files about 2/3 the size or larger than what you describe, and I can tell you that of the 8 developers here, that is what we hate the most. We loose more time on xml merges than any other merge by double. Using sub-applications does have some technical considerations that have to be accounted for. I realize that we could use a merge feature of a versioning tool also.
