I agree with Jose, you should first look at JNDI.

If you really need an LDAP client SDK, I would suggest the Netscape LDAP 
Java SDK which is freely available (with source) at

http://www.mozilla.org/directory/

Novell has also contributed an SDK to OpenLDAP, which you can find at

http://www.openldap.org/
