Florian: Is there a "nice" way? Well, that's a stretch. But you can create an instance of java.text.NumberFormat for the user's specific locale (which should be available in the session scope as session.getAttribute(Action.LOCALE_KEY)). Then use the parse() method of NumberFormat to convert Strings like the below into a Number, and use the format() method to do the reverse. It's all in the api docs for NumberFormat.
