http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/logging/guide.html is the help for logging+log4j. Mainly it should just be having log4j in some way in the classpath, though -Dorg.apache.commons.logging.Log=org.apache.commons.logging.impl.Log4JLogger looks useable too.
