Strange, i built this just a few days ago on lots of different distros (Debian Buster (albeit stable) was one of them) and it built just fine. Can you try cloning the repo to a fresh directory and retrying a build and see if that is any better. Googling around some have said that by ditching any previous folders and starting afresh this worked ok.
