Then why does config/sysdeps/ubuntu-8.10.xml list gconf and python-gconf as dependencies? Do some parts of sugar use the system-supplied ones and others the privately installed ones?

I cannot find the python package, though - neither installed any source for it. GConf-dbus seems to provide only the shared libraries, not the Python wrapper (at least it doesn't say anything at all about Python during the whole build).
