Not that I know of. I tried running several on Firefox 3.5 beta, none works.
I guess someone could create a wrapper when all major browsers (except IE of course) have all/most of the features of Gears. JavaScript ORMs for example, tend to be able to use several backends (Gears, AIR, HTML 5 storage storage, etc.), but the application would have to use one of those ORMs. But for now, it's easier to just install Gears.
