I would like to understand better what you mean with porting. It should just be matter of writing package specs (or really fixing the existing ones...), no? If there is any more work involved strongly suggest you first discuss it on this mailing list, then have it done upstream directly. That way the whole community will benefit from your effort and you will benefit from the community input. Upstreaming after the fact rarely works.
