My experience is that Linux is usually a little faster but I did never
real comparisons on the same server hardware with different OS.
Concerning the hardware you will need enough RAM but not extraordinary
sizes, for a Brunswick simulation (250000 inhabitants) 8GB are more than
enough. Core speed is more important than number of cores since SUMO is
not multi threaded.
