Never mind, solved it.
I had to ignore the "--" in front of each option, so addOption("start","1")
does the trick.

Subject: [sumo-user] Auto-start using Traci4J
Hi all,
I'm using Traci4J and I'd like to get SUMO start on launch. I know how to do it
with TraCI in python, but it's not clear how to do so with Java. I've tried
using:
SumoTraciConnection.addOption("--start","")
but it doesn't work. Actually it doesn't work for other SUMO options so it
might be the wrong method to call.
Any help will be much appreciated.
