The number of generated trips affects the level of traffic in those parts of your network that are not downstream of a calibrator (and even the traffic between calibrators as vehicles may depart there as well). Thus it is important to find a "realistic" amount of random background traffic. As a validation yardstick, calibrators report the amount of vehicles that were inserted or deleted from the background traffic. If this number is quite high, modify the background level accordingly. Furthermore you can exclude some calibrators and see how much the traffic differs there from the desired value.
