Hello,
SUMO-GUI already performs a number of optimizations linked to the zoom
level (i.e. vehicles and many other details aren't being drawn).
You can change the 'Minimum Size' for vehicles, persons, POIs and polygons
in the gui settings to change the zoom at which this happens.
You could also set the edge width 'Exaggeration' to a value below < 1 to
reduce the drawing detail of edges earlier.

Other than that, how big is your network? I'm loading the city of berlin
(166 Mb) and it's still fairly usable.
