USA patent No. 64,892 of 21st May 1867 to be exact although it wasn't the familiar full 'figure 8' shape he used. Two profiled plates, each covering six months of the analemma, were fitted into a rotating holder to face the Sun in the middle of an equinoctial hour bow.
