Greetings, all.

Does anyone, please, have any information on the life of Mrs. H.K.F.
Eden? Mrs. Eden was born Horatia K.F. Gatty, third daughter and fifth
child of Mrs. Alfred (Margaret) Gatty, author of the seminal U.K. work,
"The Book of Sundials" (1872). After Mrs. Gatty's death, Mrs. Eden,
together with Eleanor Lloyd, revised the later editions of the book,
culminating in the masterly 1900 edition.

We have a life of Mrs. Gatty, written by her granddaughter, Christabel
Maxwell (C. Maxwell: "Mrs Gatty and Mrs. Ewing, London: Constable,
1949). The part of this book relating to Mrs. Gatty is summarised by
David Young in the Bulletin of the British Sundial Society, 95,3, 1995.
Mrs. Ewing was born Juliana Gatty, Mrs. Gatty's second daughter. She
was an important writer for children but does not feature in the family
sundial publications. Recently I have discovered a second biography of
Mrs. Ewing (Mrs. Ewing, Mrs. Molesworth and Mrs. Hodgson Burnet, by
Marghanita Laski, London, Arthur Barker, 1950). Although there are
references in this book to both Mrs. Gatty and Mrs. Eden they are
slight. Sundial interest lies in Mrs. Eden, not Mrs. Ewing. Any
information on Mrs. Eden and also on Eleanor Lloyd, the "family friend"
who listed many overseas dials, would be welcome.
