Hi Mac,

Here is the note Mark sent to the list, he and Carl Trost gave an
excellent talk. The talk was mainly given by Carl and as I understand it
is was very similar to the one he gave in Seattle at the NASS
conference, only longer (3 1/2 hours phew!).

I will be sure to keep you up to date on the Porter SunClock as I make
progress. Thanks for getting in touch

PS I still have yet to receive a reply to my query on the origins of the
"celestial sphere" sundial drawing I found in Dolan and later on Gordon
Uber's site, have you found anything?

Best Regards,

Luke

Subject: Announcement for San Francisco Area Dialists

Please excuse my use of this international forum for an announcement
of regional interest.

Dialists in the San Francisco Bay Area are invited to attend a free
talk by North American Sundial Society member Carl Trost on the topic

The Historical, Monumental, and Sometimes Quirky Sundials
and Sun Sculptures of the San Francisco Bay Area

on Saturday evening, 7 November, 8:00 p.m., at the Chabot Observatory
and Science Center, 4917 Mountain Boulevard, Oakland (near the junction
of highways 13 and 580), in the lower-level classroom of the cube-shaped
planetarium building. This presentation is actually part of the monthly
lecture program of the Eastbay Astronomical Society, but visitors are
always welcome.

Profusely illustrated with slides, Carl's talk will touch on...

  * A 34-foot diameter dial used to promote the sale of a defunct
    racetrack subdivided into residential lots.

  * A dial so large that an amphitheater is located inside its time
    ring.

  * A 16-ton Sun sculpture on a front lawn that was moved across the
Bay because the home's new owners didn't like it.

  * A make-over turns a spectacular 50-foot floral dial into an
    ugly duckling.

  * If you know where Wild West gun slinger Wyatt Earp is buried,
you won't have any trouble finding this nearby dial.

Any questions about directions to the Chabot Observatory, details about
the lecture, etc., can be directed to the undersigned .
