Contributors to the Great Sundial Motto Festival, all and singular,
Greetings!

Having allowed sufficient time for everyone to express their views I
think it is now possible to suggest a collective notion of the form to be
adopted as follows:-

1. A judged competition with a 'winner' is inappropriate for many
reasons which have been convincingly argued by many.

2. Original work only may be submitted on this occasion.*

3. Entries may be in any poetic style but should be appropriate in
length and content for inclusion on a sundial. In the circumstances
(It's my bat and my ball!) I hope you will trust me to act as judge in
this matter although any problems will be referred back to the poet!

4. Members may submit as many original items as they wish in any
language but these should be accompanied with an English translation
which conveys the sense, if not the poetic structure, of the entry.

5. All entries should be received by Tony Moss at <
[EMAIL PROTECTED] > by 23.59pm Universal Time (Greenwich Mean
Time) on 30th September 1998.

6. Every entrant will have one 'ticket' , no matter how many individual
items they submit, from which a winner will be drawn by an independent
person under impartial supervision .

7. The draw will take place on 1st October 1998.

8. The winner will be notified to the List by email immediately and he
or she will receive the promised prize as soon as possible thereafter.

9. A full list of all entries will be published on the Sundial Mailing
List.

10. If list members then wish to choose the entries which please them
most and communicate their reasoned preferences to the List of course
they are free to do so but this will be in no way part of the 'Festival'

I hope this format incorporates most of the thoughts and suggestions
which have been received. If the final list of entries approaches the
quality of those sent so far then I think you may all agree that the
resource we are in process of creating will be of value to sundial
designers in years to come.

But PLEASE - keep those entries coming - success depends on YOU!

* It might be thought worthwhile to follow this event with some sort of
Motto Forum to which any member could submit special favourites from
their motto collection to form a categorised motto database to be made
available to list members on request.

P.S. I'm sorry there's been a slight delay in presenting the above but
I've spent the weekend as the adoring slave of a bewitching young lady -
my first grandaughter who will be two in September!
