Jim,

Many large atlases have world maps showing population densities.  These maps
may be instructive to him and give him a rough answer.  Lines of latitude
passing through the major cities such as New York, Tokyo, and Mexico City
would
be good candidates.

NASA (I think) has published a composite photo of the entire earth at night
showing the lights from cities; again; it would be instructive.  It has been
reprinted many times; I think it has appeared in National Geographic Magazine.

The search for the answer may be more interesting and educational than the
final answer itself, which may be inconclusive.
