Jim, Many large atlases have world maps showing population densities. These maps may be instructive to him and give him a rough answer. Lines of latitude passing through the major cities such as New York, Tokyo, and Mexico City would be good candidates.
NASA (I think) has published a composite photo of the entire earth at night showing the lights from cities; again; it would be instructive. It has been reprinted many times; I think it has appeared in National Geographic Magazine. The search for the answer may be more interesting and educational than the final answer itself, which may be inconclusive.
