Aiming the gnomon at the north star is easier said than done, but will work 
well.  The North star is 0.5 degrees away from true north, and although this 
is not perfect, it is good enough for all but the most precise dials.  To 
achieve perfect alignment, you can then use a free program called 
"SundialAlign!", available at www.precisionsundial.com
