Hi Gianni,

Thanks for the link to Gallica. I followed your advice and was able to view the texts cited: Clavius on the construction of sundials and Sacrobosco on armillary spheres (Sphaera Mundi). This is a great example of the power of the internet. All we need to do is ask the question and a treasure trove is available. Specific personal advice such as the links that you provided are much better than that provided by search engines like Google. I understand a little French so I could navigate on the Gallica site but my knowledge of Latin is too limited to use the original texts. I should have paid more attention in school. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!

But based on your advice, I will be enjoying an economical Christmas.

Cheers,  Roger Bailey

Hi Roger,
thanks for the notes and the links.
If someone wants a more economic Christmas  [   :-)  ]    I suggest to download some old texts of Clavius [Fabrica et usus instrumenti to horologiorum descriptionem], Oronce Fine [De gli oriuoli et quadranti a sole] and Sacrobosco  [Sphaera mundi]
from http://gallica.bnf.fr /   [Bibliothèque Numérique de la "Bibliothèque Nazionale de France" ]

Hi Gianni,

Thanks for the information. My Christmas wish list will include the reprint of Chris's commentary on John Holywood's tract on Armillary Spheres, but 178 Euros is a high price and I have difficulty reading Latin texts. I may have to be satisfied with information on the web on this topic. A Google search on 'Sacro Bosco" turns up lots of great information. This link shows the cover page. http://www.luc.edu/libraries/science/jesuits/claviii.gif I used this picture in my presentation on Armillary Spheres at the 2001 NASS conference. I can provide copies of the presentation on request. Background on Christoh Clavius is given on the following link. http://www.luc.edu/libraries/science/jesuits/1580.html . The following is good link back to the original tract. http://www.aim25.ac.uk/cgi-bin/search2?coll_id=1612&inst_id=13
