I would just add to Jim's suggestion a bag of dry sand raked flat under the paving slab, this will help the paver to bed down properly. BTW this technique is good enough for using as a footing for building certain types of frame houses in the UK.


Absolutely! I forgot to mention that!

Actually, about 4" of fine crushed rock is very good as well because the material will lock together when tamped down and provide a very stable bedding for the stone. Even more important, if you live where it freezes the porous material under the stone will aid in drainage and help minimize freeze thaw/heaving.
