Further to Andrew James message on Roman Striking on Clocks, the saving on the number of striking blows is much greater than perhaps some non-clockies might appreciate, as Andrew just drew attention to the two blows saved at 4 o'clock. At 12 only 4 strokes are needed instead of 12, 3 at 11, 2 at 10, 3 at 9 and so on. This means that only 30 strokes are required in 12 hours in place of the usual 78, a considerable saving for, as Andrew said, long duration clocks.
